Investigators are trying to determine if the National Archives was the target of a hack attack after a video by a known cyberattack group purporting to do just that made the YouTube rounds.
The Hill reported that the video shows an Internet user scrolling through a database of agency files while ominous music plays in the background.
Security agents who viewed the video said it seemed as if the hackers had gained access to the back end of the National Archives’ website, The Hill said.
But officials affiliated with the National Archives say their site, and their information, is safe — and has been.
“The National Archives and Records Administration has not suffered a data breach,” William Bosanko, the National Archives chief operating officer, said in a statement. “In the last several months we have faced several unauthorized attempts to access our public-facing website Archives.gov. However, we do not believe that any of these attempts resulted in access to information that is not otherwise available to the public.”
A hack of National Archives data could lead to the release of personal information about former high-ranking public officials, including presidents and their families.
