Republicans in Idaho say the state should be declared “Judeo-Christian” as a means of returning to constitutional roots and the Founding Fathers’ visions, and they’ve pressed forward with a resolution to do just that — albeit symbolically only.
The resolution was due for vote by the Kootenai County Republican Central Committee and was nonbinding. But its text called for Idaho to be “formally and specifically declared a Christian state,” Reuters reported. It also put forth the view that Christianity in America is under “strident attack,” especially in the schools.
Supporters, meanwhile, say they only want to foster the type of political atmosphere that would make James Madison and Thomas Jefferson proud.
“We’re a Christian community in a Christian state, and the Republican Party is a Christian Party,” said Jeff Tyler, a member of the committee, Reuters reported. “It’s important that Christians stand up and be unashamed to say they’re Christians.”
