Rep. Trey Gowdy had some hard words Wednesday for Democrats who’ve stood idly by or outright supported President Obama’s executive action on immigration, warning them that they’d rue the day.
“You may benefit from the president’s failure to enforce the law today,” the South Carolina Republican said during a House Judiciary Committee hearing on Mr. Obama’s refusal to stand down on his amnesty plans, despite a judge’s order.
“But I’ll make you this promise. There will come a day where you will cry out for the enforcement of the law,” Mr. Gowdy said. “There will come a day when you long for the law to be the foundation of this republic.
“So you be careful what you do with the law today because if you weaken it today, you weaken it forever,” he said.
His statements come in context of discussing how to defend Mr. Obama’s immigration action. Mr. Gowdy’s view is that Mr. Obama has the authority to create immigration enforcement procedures, but not reward illegals considered low-risk with work permits and federal protection.
