T.J. Maxx, Marshalls and other chains under the TJX Cos. umbrella announced Wednesday their employees will be given pay raises that bring their minimum wages to $9 per hour, beginning in June.

TJX, which also oversees HomeGoods and Sierra Trading Post Associates, will also increase wages for workers to $10 a hour by 2016, so long as those employees have at least six months of employment with the company, Bloomberg reported.

“This pay initiative is an important part of our strategies to continue attracting and retaining the best talent in order to deliver a great shopping experience for our customers, remain competitive on wages in our U.S. markets and stay focused on our value mission,” said CEO Carol Meyrowitz in a statement reported by Bloomberg.

The announcement comes in the wake of Wal-Mart’s recent hike of minimum wages for 500,000 of its workers to $9 an hour by April and $10 per hour by February 2016.
