Sen. John McCain said Sunday he’s “ashamed” of his country, President Obama and himself for not doing more to help Ukraine in its fight to fend off pro-Russian rebels.

Appearing on CBS’ “Face the Nation,” the Arizona Republican urged the Obama administration to provide lethal weapons to the Ukrainian military. Mr. Obama has said he’s considering such action but has yet to make a decision.

“The Ukrainians aren’t asking for American boots on the ground. That’s not the question here. They are asking for weapons to defend themselves,” said Mr. McCain, chairman of the Senate Committee on Armed Services. “They are being slaughtered and their military is being shattered.

“This is a shameful chapter. I’m ashamed of my country. I’m ashamed of my president. And I’m ashamed of myself that I haven’t done more to help these people,” he said. “It is really, really heartbreaking.”

Germany and France helped broker a peace deal two weeks ago between Ukraine and Russia, but it hasn’t led to an end in the fighting.
