A county in Texas issued the state’s first marriage license to a gay couple since voters approved a referendum that defined marriage as a union of only man and woman.
Travis County made the move after a court ordered the clerk to do so — but only to one couple, Sarah Goodfriend and Suzanne Bryant, the New York Post reported.
“The court order only applies to this one couple,” said the Travis County clerk, in the news outlet, explaining that it’s not expected that the issuance of more gay marriage licenses will follow.
Legal historians said a same-sex couple was able to obtain a marriage license in the early 1970s in Texas, but none since.
A U.S. district judge ruled last year that the ban on gay marriage in the state was unconstitutional.
