Ron Dermer, the Israeli ambassador to the United States, sparked a bit of social media backlash with a Super Bowl tweet that was obviously aimed at the latest President Obama-Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tiff — the one where the Jewish leader sidestepped perceived protocols and accepted an invitation from Speaker John Boehner to address Congress.

Mr. Dermer’s tweet, Mediaite reported: “Breaking Protocol, Choosing Sides: Go Patriots.”

Mr. Obama will not meet with Mr. Netanyahu when he speaks before Congress, citing long-standing White House policies to not meet with foreign leaders who are about to face a re-election. Israel will choose new parliamentary leadership in early March.

Social media was quick to criticize Mr. Dermer’s tweet.

One simply wrote: “@AmbDermer Go [expletive] your self.”

And another, Mediaite found: “If only he was as good at growing bipartisan support for Israel as mocking it RT @AmbDermer: Breaking Protocol, Choosing Sides: Go Patriots.”
