Westminster Kennel Club Show’s newest Best in Show pick was handed to a beagle named Miss P who’s actually a relative to the first beagle to ever win the title, Uno, in 2008.
Swagger, an Old English sheepdog, was a crowd favorite, The New York Times reported. But judges went with Miss P, a 4-year-old, 15-inch beagle, the grandniece of Uno.
Judge David Merriam took an unusually long 20 minutes to make the selection. He finally said Miss P “had wonderful type” and “a wonderful head,” and he could see her as both “the beagle in the ring and the beagle in the field,” The New York Times reported.
Miss P’s handler, meanwhile, expressed gratitude.
“She’s hungry,” Will Alexander said, gesturing to Miss P, the New York Times reported. “And I’m overwhelmed.”
