The U.S. Consulate in Shanghai suffered a brief state of panic after a car driven by a Chinese man slammed into the front gate, injuring a security officer.
Fox News said the car sent a police officer flying. The Wall Street Journal reported a Chinese paramilitary officer was injured, but staffers inside the consulate were fine.
The Wall Street Journal reported the driver — who was arrested and identified as Liu Daojie, a 35-year-old Fujian working as a salesman for a Chinese industrial manufacturer — claimed that somebody was trying to assassinate him, and he was desperate to get police attention.
Mr. Liu’s wife told police that he’s been living under that belief for months and rarely went outside his home, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Mr. Liu’s dark sedan didn’t actually penetrate the consulate building, which is a 90-year-old French Renaissance mansion located on a large tract of land.
