Kristin Beck, a former Navy SEAL who published a memoir and came out as a transgender woman in 2013, plans to mount a primary challenge to House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer, Maryland Democrat, to represent the state’s 5th congressional district.
Ms. Beck had a 20-year military career and was a member of the elite SEAL Team 6, and published a memoir in 2013 about her experience coming out. CNN also ran a documentary last year about her experience.
“For the last two or three years I have been watching Congress very closely, and the reality is that the whole process has broken down and our representatives have simply dug in their heels,” she told The Huffington Post, also saying that while Mr. Hoyer has done a good job, she thinks he’s been in office too long.
In a statement to the Baltimore Sun, which first reported on her candidacy, Mr. Hoyer said he is proud to represent the district, appreciates the support of his constituents and “will continue to work on their behalf to address their priorities, and earn their vote in 2016.”
