Protesters in Ferguson carried tombstones with the names of victims of police shootings around town in a mock funeral display that culminated with the dumping of a coffin on the doorstep of Mayor Francis Slay’s home.
The protesters rang the mayor’s bell and started mourning loudly in the streets outside his home, while playing Chopin’s “Funeral March” in the background, the St. Louis American reported.
“This is Monday Mournings,” said Elizabeth Vega, the leader of the Artivists, an activist group, the newspaper reported. “We are here because the mayor has repeatedly locked us out of City Hall. So we now need to come to his house. This is putting all people in power on notice.”
The coffin drop and mock funeral procession was just the first of many aimed at pressuring politicians for change, in the face of growing police-community tensions that hail back to the shooting death of teen Michael Brown, she suggested, the St. Louis American reported.
