Ohio Gov. John Kasich left open the door Wednesday to the possibility of backing someone other than Donald Trump in the presidential race if he wins the GOP presidential nomination.

Asked Wednesday whether he would support Mr. Trump if he captures the party’s nod, Mr. Kasich said he signed a pledge to do just that, and quipped that is the problem with signing pledges.

“Now look, is it possible that you change you mind? Yeah,” Mr. Kasich said. “It takes something extreme to do it.”

“But I will tell you, sir, there is no way that Donald Trump is going to be president,” he said. “I have been saying it for weeks. I don’t even take it seriously because he isn’t going to win. It is not going to happen.”

Mr. Trump came under fire from Republicans earlier this year after he refused to pledge his allegiance to the eventual GOP nominee and to rule out a run as an independent.

Mr. Trump later signed onto the GOP pledge, but teased the idea this week that he could run as an independent after coming under fire over his Muslim ban proposal.

He highlighted a poll on Twitter that showed almost seven of 10 of his supporters would vote for him if he ran as an independent.
