Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump said German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who Time magazine announced Wednesday as its Person of the Year, is “ruining Germany” and that he had already predicted he would lose despite being the “big favorite.”

“I told you @TIME Magazine would never pick me as person of the year despite being the big favorite … They picked person who is ruining Germany,” Mr. Trump tweeted Wednesday morning.

The magazine’s write-up on the decision noted Mrs. Merkel’s welcoming of Syrian refugees seeking asylum into Germany, among other efforts this year. Mr. Trump has pledged to send back refugees that come into the United States if he’s elected.

In addition to Mr. Trump, Mrs. Merkel beat out Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, Black Matter activists, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, Uber CEO Travis Kalanick, and former Olympic athlete Caitlyn Jenner for the nod.
