Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump on Tuesday responded to former Vice President Dick Cheney’s criticizing the notion of a ban on Muslims entering the United States by pointing out his own opposition to the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
“If he really felt that way, maybe he wouldn’t have gotten us into that horrible war in Iraq, which, by the way, I was opposed to,” Mr. Trump said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”
“I was opposed to the war in Iraq, you know,” he said. “People think I’m militant - I’m so militant, but I’m the only one, practically, that you can say was opposed to the war in Iraq. There were very few of us. Because I said it would destabilize the Middle East. And a lot of that has led to this.”
Mr. Trump has proposed, with some exceptions, a ban on Muslims entering the United States. Asked about the proposal on radio host Hugh Hewitt’s show Monday, Mr. Cheney said: “Well, I think this whole notion that somehow we can just say no more Muslims, just ban a whole religion, goes against everything we stand for and believe in.”
