At least three Taliban gunmen have launched an attack at the airport in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar, according to multiple news reports.
An Afghan official told The Associated Press that the attacks started with the Taliban targeting the facilities main gate. The clashes are reportedly still underway.
The Kandahar Air Field has both a military and civilian section.
Sameem Khpalwak, a spokesman for the local governor, told Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty that three armed attackers wearing suicide vests are believed to have taken up position inside a school compound where airport staff live and were firing upon security forces.
Afghan security forces were returning fire, though no casualties have been reported yet.
Taliban forces have become more aggressive in Afghanistan following the withdrawal of U.S. troops from the region. Afghan forces took over security in the country on Jan. 1 but have struggled to counter increasing Taliban attacks.
