Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter has joined several other mayors in condemning Donald Trump, saying that if given the power, he would ban the Republican presidential candidate from the city following his controversial call for a ban on Muslims entering the U.S.

“If I had the power, the only banning that would be done is that I would ban [Trump] from Philadelphia,” Mr. Nutter, a Democrat, said Tuesday, CNN reported. “We don’t have any room for that kind of stupidity here.”

Hours earlier, Mayor John Fetterman Braddock, Pennsylvania, released a statement calling Mr. Trump a “jagoff,” a western Pennsylvania slang expression meaning stupid.

On Monday, Rick Kriseman, the mayor of St. Petersburg, Florida, sarcastically banned the Republican presidential front-runner from entering his city “until we fully understand the dangerous threat posed by all Trumps.”

His now-viral tweet was in response to Mr. Trump’s call for “for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on.”

The comments have sparked a wave of backlash, including from fellow Republicans. Rival candidate Jeb Bush called Mr. Trump “unhinged,” while former Vice President Dick Cheney said the proposal “goes against everything we stand for and believe in.”

The White House said Tuesday that Mr. Trump’s proposal “disqualifies him from serving as president.”
