The New York Daily News branded the head of the National Rifle Association a “terrorist” on its Friday cover.
The cover features an image of Syed Farook, one of the gunmen in the Wednesday shooting at the Inland Regional Center for the disabled in San Bernardino, Calif.
“The News Says He’s a TERRORIST,” the headline states in bold letters, “but so are these guys. …” it continues alongside images of recent mass shooters and Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of the NRA.
“Syed Farook joins long list of murderous psychos enabled by NRA’s sick gun jihad against America in the name of profit,” the cover reads.
The Daily News said Mr. LaPierre declined to respond to its cover story. The NRA responded to critics on Twitter with an opinion piece published in USA Today.
“The #NRA won’t accept the blame for murderers, nor apologize for fighting for our right to defend against them,” the NRA wrote on its official Twitter account.
This is not the first time the Daily News has gone after Mr. LaPierre. Following the 2012 Sandy Hook shootings, the newspaper’s headline called him the “craziest man on earth.” The Daily News also labeled Mr. LaPierre “Jihadi Wayne” in a recent cover story about the NRA’s efforts to block gun control legislation.
On Thursday, the New York Daily News blasted GOP lawmakers for offering their “thoughts and prayers” after the San Bernardino shooting but maintaining that stricter gun control laws were not the answer to the problem of mass shootings in the U.S. The Thursday cover featured tweets from prominent Republican lawmakers such as Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul with the headline “God isn’t fixing this.”
