Trent Williams: “No matter who we get, we’ve got our match cut out for us”

ASHBURN — The Washington Redskins have three potential playoff opponents and it won’t be determined who they are playing until late Sunday night.

The Redskins will face either the Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings or Seattle Seahawks in the first round of the playoffs at FedEx Field. The Arizona Cardinals will face the Seahawks at 4:25 p.m., followed by the Packers facing the Vikings at 8:30 p.m.

The scenarios are as follows: If Minnesota wins, the Redskins will face Green Bay. If Green Bay and Seattle win, the Redskins will face the Seahawks. If Green Bay and Arizona win or tie, the Redskins will face the Vikings.

One of the challenges ahead of the playoffs is trying to get a jumpstart on preparing for any of the three possible opponents, while still planning for Sunday’s regular-season finale against the Dallas Cowboys.

“Well, our quality control guys are breaking down each opponent — each possible opponent — so we have a jumpstart when we do get the final word who we’re playing and when I’ll at least have them all broken down already,” coach Jay Gruden said. “Right now we’re trying to focus on the Dallas game, make sure we have a good plan in place for our players so they can go in there and compete and do what we do, Redskins football-wise. Then when the game is over we’ll have ample time to get ready for our next opponent, whoever that is.”

The Redskins will be flying back from Dallas while the game between Green Bay and Minnesota is taking place, but that won’t stop left tackle Trent Williams and others from tuning in.

“Of course you want to know who you have coming into your backyard,” Williams said. “Obviously, we’ve got three good teams to choose from. No matter who we get, we’ve got our match cut out for us. But, of course, I would be lying if I said I’m not going to pay attention to it. Me, I’m thinking about the possibilities in my head all the time.”
