President Obama will travel to Germany in late April to attend a trade show and confer with Chancellor Angela Merkel, the White House said Wednesday.

Mr. Obama will be the first sitting U.S. president to participate in the Hannover Messe — the world’s largest trade show for industrial technology — to drum up investment and trade opportunities in the U.S. He’ll also meet with Mrs. Merkel, who’s under fire at home for her policy of allowing Syrian refugees into the country.

Mr. Obama has been criticized by Republican presidential candidates and others for his program to accept 10,000 Syrian refugees in the U.S. in 2016.

It will be Mr. Obama’s fifth trip to Germany as president.
