Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump said this week in Iowa that there aren’t many evangelical Christians who hail from Cuba.
“Just remember this - you gotta remember, in all fairness, to the best of my knowledge, not too many evangelicals come out of Cuba, okay?” Mr. Trump said at a campaign event Tuesday. “Just remember that…just remember.”
“In all fairness, here we are,” he said, holding up a Bible he had brought onstage. “Just remember that, folks. When you’re casting your ballot, remember. I have a lot of support, lot of support from amazing people.”
“Franklin Graham said incredible things about me the other day,” Mr. Trump said. “We have so many pastors and so many ministers in favor, and it’s just very important to me.”
Mr. Trump has been jockeying for support from evangelical Christians in Iowa with 2016 GOP rival Sen. Ted Cruz, who is Cuban American.
Mr. Cruz has about a 3-point edge over Mr. Trump in the latest RealClearPolitics average of polling in the state, 30.3 percent to 27.5 percent.
Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, who is also Cuban American, is in third at 12 percent in the latest average.
