Metropolitan Police have reported the District’s 162nd homicide this year with Monday night’s shooting deaths of two men in Southeast.

Officers in the 7th Police District responded to reports of a shooting around 5:39 p.m. Monday in the 2300 block of Hartford Street SE in the Garfield Hills neighborhood. They found Darnell Antonio Mayfield, 34, of Southeast, suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency personnel transported him to a hospital, where he later died.

Report of gunshots around 8:20 p.m. in the 1000 block of Savannah Street SE in Congress Heights led officers to an unidentified man suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency personnel determined he was dead at the scene.

The slayings brought the number of homicides in the District this year to 162, up from 105 total homicides in 2014. The District hasn’t seen a homicide rate this high since 2008, when the Metropolitan Police Department reported 186 homicides.

Investigations into Monday’s homicides are ongoing.
