Ethan Couch, the ’affluenza’ teenager given probation for a DUI accident that killed four people, is reportedly in custody after having fled with his mother to Mexico.
According to CNN, Mexican authorities arrested the two Monday at a resort near Puerto Vallarta.
When he was 16, Couch received ten years of probation for the DUI killings, rather than the prosecution-sought decades in prison, thanks to what was widely derided as the “affluenza” defense … essentially that his family’s affluence was like a disease (“influenza”) that left him incapable of acting like a responsible adult.
He and his mother fled to Mexico and had warrants put out for him last week after social-media posts showed him playing beer pong — an obvious violation of his terms of a DUI-related probation.
