Most Republican voters in the early presidential states of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina support temporarily banning Muslims from entering the United States, according to a new set of polls.
Seventy-seven percent of Republicans in Iowa and South Carolina and 63 percent of New Hampshire Republicans said they support the proposed ban, according to the polling from CBS News/YouGov. Most Democrats in each state opposed such a ban.
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has attracted significant attention for putting forth such a proposal recently.
A Fox News poll released late last week found that 50 percent of voters overall favor Mr. Trump’s ban, compared to 46 percent who oppose it.
When Mr. Trump’s name was removed from the question, though, 55 percent said they supported such a temporary ban, with 40 percent opposed.
Among Democrats in the Fox poll, 45 percent said they favored such a ban when Mr. Trump’s name was not mentioned, but support fell to 25 percent when the plan was tied to Mr. Trump.
Among Republicans, 71 percent said they favored it when Mr. Trump’s name was mentioned and 72 percent said they favored it when his name was not mentioned.
