After begin shot three times during the attack at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino Wednesday, 24-year-old Kevin Ortiz called both his father and his newlywed wife to assure them he was alive.
“Kevin said he had been shot three times and that he was in pain but that the was all right,” his wife of two weeks, Dyana Ortiz, 23, told the Los Angeles Times. “Then he said ’I love you,’ and I said ’I love you.’”
Mr. Ortiz also called his father, Carlos Ortiz, shortly after being shot, telling him “I’ve been shot three times, Dad. I’m in pain. Don’t worry. There’s a policeman with me.”
The younger Mr. Ortiz, who is a county environmental inspector, was shot twice in the leg and once in the shoulder, the L.A. Times reports.
Four hours after the incident, police engaged suspects in a shootout on the street. Police report that one suspect is down, and a second suspect may be on the loose. The situation is described as “active.”
