A spokeswoman for GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump questioned Friday what the point of having nuclear weapons is if the U.S. is “afraid” to use them.
Speaking on Fox News’ “The O’Reilly Factor,” spokeswoman Katrina Pierson criticized Mr. Trump’s Republican opponents for not living up to their tough talk on war.
“What good does it do to have a good nuclear triad if you’re afraid to use it?” Ms. Pierson asked, Mediaite reported.
Her comments came after Mr. Trump received backlash for not knowing what the nuclear triad — the three different system the U.S. has to launch nuclear weapons — is during this week’s GOP debate.
Conservative columnist Kurt Schlichter fired back at Ms. Pierson’s comments, saying Mr. Trump is inconsistent when it comes to military intervention in the Middle East.
“And is it too much that he know what the nuclear triad is?” Mr. Schlichter said, Mediaite reported.
“The point of the nuclear triad is to be afraid to use the damn thing,” he continued. “You want to scare the hell out of the other side.”
Mr. Schlichter added, “Frankly, my side will be more scared if Donald trump gets his finger on the button.”
This is not the first time Ms. Pierson has raised eyebrows with conservative commentators in the media. Earlier this month she got into a heated argument with CNN conservative commentator S.E. Cupp when she defended Mr. Trump’s call to temporarily ban Muslims from entering the U.S., saying, “So what? They’re Muslim!”
