Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has a 31-point lead over Sen. Bernard Sanders of Vermont, according to a new national poll released as the candidates prepare for Saturday’s Democratic presidential debate in New Hampshire.
Mrs. Clinton was at 59 percent in the ABC News-Washington Post poll, followed by Mr. Sanders at 28 percent. Former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley was at 5 percent.
In an ABC-Post survey released last month, Mrs. Clinton had been at 60 percent, Mr. Sanders was at 34 percent, and Mr. O’Malley was at 3 percent.
Still, 44 percent in the latest poll said Mr. Sanders was more honest and trustworthy, compared to 38 percent who said the same of Mrs. Clinton. But majorities gave Mrs. Clinton the edge on who would be better at handling the threat of terrorism, who is “closer to you on the issues,” and who “better understands the problems of people like you.”
