At least seven people have been killed in a Taliban attack near the Spanish embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan, the government said Saturday.
Among the dead are four Afghan police officers and two others, including a foreigner, said Sediq Sediqqi, spokesman for the Afghan Interior Ministry, on Saturday. The Spanish Interior Ministry later announced that a Spanish policeman had been killed and a second Spanish officer had later died from injuries sustained during the attack, The New York Times reported.
In addition, seven civilians and two policemen were injured, Mr. Sediqqi said. Twelve foreign citizens were rescued by Afghan forces during the operation, he added.
The attack occurred in the Kabul neighborhood of Shir pur, which is home to many foreign embassies and a large expatriate community.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack in a tweet.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid tweeted that “a foreign invaders’ guesthouse … came under suicide attacks this evening, heavy casualties inflicted and firefight ongoing.”
The embassy attack came just two days after another Taliban attack near the airport in the southern city of Kandahar, which lasted over 24 hours and killed more than 50 people.
