The Boston Red Sox and pitcher David Price have agreed on a seven-year, $217 million contract, according to multiple news reports.
Price, a 30-year-old left-hander, went 14-5 with an American League-best 2.45 ERA in 2015 while splitting his season between the Detroit Tigers and the Toronto Blue Jays.
A five-time All-Star, Price won the AL Cy Young Award in 2012 as a member of the Tampa Bay Rays and has finished second in the voting twice, including last season.
Price has struggled in postseason play, however, with a 2-7 record and 5.40 ERA.
Price was among the elite starting pitchers to hit the open market this offseason, along with Zack Greinke and Johnny Cueto, who remain unsigned, and Jordan Zimmerman, who this week agreed to a five-year, $110 million deal with the Detroit Tigers.
The Red Sox finished last in the AL East in 2015, and the team’s starters posted a 4.39 ERA, third-worst in the league.
The Boston Globe was the first to report Price had reached an agreement with the Red Sox. According to the newspaper, Price will be introduced at Fenway Park on Friday.
