President Obama will not apologize for comparing some Republicans in Congress to hardliners in Iran, the White House said Thursday.
In a speech Wednesday promoting his nuclear deal with Iran, Mr. Obama said that some Republicans in Congress are “making common cause” with Iranian hardliners, since both groups want to kill the landmark nuclear agreement.
Top lawmakers, such as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, have called on the president to retract those comments.
But White House press secretary Josh Earnest made clear Thursday that won’t happen.
“I think it was a statement of fact,” he said, adding that Mr. Obama has no plans to apologize or retract his comments.
