Republican presidential candidate Chris Christie on Saturday pitched an interesting idea for how to keep tabs on immigrants and visitors to the U.S.: track them like FedEx packages.
“At any moment, FedEx can tell you where that package is. It’s on the truck. It’s at the station. It’s on the airplane,” Mr. Christie said at a New Hampshire town hall event, Meidiaite reported.
As president, Mr. Christie said he would ask Fred Smith, the founder of FedEx, “to come work for the government for three months, just come for three months to Immigration and Customs Enforcement and show these people.”
The New Jersey governor estimates that his tracking idea would slash the number of immigrants coming into the country illegally by at least 40 percent, Mediaite reported.
Mr. Christie immediately received backlash on Twitter for the comment.
“Chris Christie, the realist, wants to track people like Fedex packages. No horrendous implications there,” one user tweeted.
“@ChrisChristie Why do you think tracking HUMAN BEINGS like a FedEx package is a good idea. Come to Hudson County and meet the people! Dick,” another said.
Another user compared Mr. Christie’s immigration plan to that of his GOP rival Donal Trump saying, “It’s funny watching @ChrisChristie tapping into his inner #Trump out of political desperation.”
