The White House Friday ridiculed Sen. Marco Rubio, a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, for calling on President Obama to downgrade a state visit for the president of China next month.

“That sounds like somebody who’s running to be social secretary of the White House, not president of the United States,” said White House press secretary Josh Earnest of Mr. Rubio, Florida Republican.

In an op-ed Friday in the Wall Street Journal, Mr. Rubio said Mr. Obama should “downgrade” the upcoming state dinner for Chinese President Xi Jinping to a “working visit” because of China’s repeated provocations against the United States. He said the administration has chosen to “appease” China instead.
