Wisconsin Rep. Gwen Moore doubled down Tuesday on remarks she made this week about Republican presidential hopeful Gov. Scott Walker “literally” tightening the noose around the black community.
“I’m not going to apologize for making those comments, and let me tell you why,” the Democrat told The Hill. “I have a long history with Scott Walker, obviously, and I have seen a trend of his to double down on racial polarization in order to feed red meat to his base.
“Maybe he doesn’t say things that are objectionable, but what he does concerns me more than what he might say,” she said. “Scott Walker should apologize to the African-American community for his policies.”
On Monday, Ms. Moore said the Wisconsin governor was “literally campaigning around the state, saying you don’t want to be like Milwaukee, while at the same time really tightening the noose, literally, around African-Americans.”
Ms. Moore said the Mr. Walker’s opposition to raising the minimum wage, requiring voters to show photo identification at the polls, and requiring drug testing for welfare recipients unfairly hurts black people.
The governor’s campaign responded to those comments, calling them “inflammatory and inappropriate.”
“Governor Walker will continue to focus on presenting solutions for Americans and uniting the country, while others continue to create division,” Walker spokeswoman AshLee Strong told The Hill.
