Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas took a few tongue-in-cheek shots at former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton in Iowa Friday, saying in contrast to the first Republican presidential debate, he was pretty sure the first Democratic debate would consist of “Hillary Clinton and the Chipotle clerk.”
Mr. Cruz, a 2016 Republican presidential candidate, asked people at the Iowa State Fair how many of them watched the first GOP debate in Cleveland.
“What an amazing array of talent was on that stage,” he said, speaking on the Des Moines Register’s political soapbox. “How fantastic is it that we have so many young, passionate, dynamic leaders stepping up to lead this party and to lead the United States of America?”
“And what a contrast with the Democrats,” he continued, saying he’s pretty sure the first Democratic debate is going to consist of “Hillary Clinton and the Chipotle clerk.”
Mrs. Clinton, the 2016 Democratic presidential front-runner, made an unannounced stop to a Chipotle during her road trip from New York to Iowa earlier in the year.
But Mr. Cruz went on to say that actually wasn’t fair.
“We can’t forget about Bernie Sanders,” he said, referring to the Vermont senator who is also running for president on the Democratic side. “So now the Democratic field consists of a wild-eyed socialist with ideas that are dangerous for America and the world. And, Bernie Sanders.”
He also said the Democrats had actually planned to have an earlier debate.
“The problem was the debate invitation was emailed to Hillary,” he said.
