The always-diabolical Raymond “Red” Reddington returned for another action-packed season to uncover more international corruption in a highly rated and entertaining crime drama on NBC.
Binge watchers can now rip through the 22 episodes of The Blacklist: The Complete Second Season (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, not rated, $75.99) via a 5-disk, Blu-ray set that looks fantastic in its screen-filling, 1:78:1 aspect ratio, high-definition presentation.
For those unaware, Red is one of the world’s most wanted criminal masterminds, and he offered himself up to a female FBI profiler as an informant in exchange for prosecution during the show’s debut season.
His presence allowed for the creation of a covert FBI task force to help unravel the deepest of conspiracy theories and take down some of the most formidable terrorists, mobsters, and corrupt politicians on the planet each week.
James Spader stars as the deliciously evil but oddly compassionate Red with a support cast featuring Megan Boone as his reluctant handler and confidante Agent Elizabeth Keen, Diego Klattenhoff as FBI Agent Donald Resller and Harry Lennix as the Director of the Counterterrorism Division Harold Cooper.
This season’s cast also included Paul Reubens (aka Pee-Wee Herman) as a creepy double agent, Mary-Louise Parker as Red’s former wife, Mozhan Marno as a Mossad operative assigned to the task force and Ron Perlman as a professional thief.
Extras offer various deleted scenes and four featurettes (averaging 12 minutes each) with production staff and Mr. Spader discussing the worldly Mr. Reddington, a quintet of his quirky associates and some episode specific characters and story arcs.
More important, fans get optional commentary tracks on the episodes “Leonard Caul” and the season-ending “Tom Connolly” with series creator Jon Bokenkamp and executive producer John Eisendrath.
