Washington D.C. and New York area airports and others along the East Coast are reporting flight delays due to an issue with their Air Traffic Control systems, according to the Federal Aviation Administration’s air traffic control website.
“The FAA is diagnosing an automation problem at an air traffic center in Leesburg, Va.,” a statement form the agency reads, The Washington Post reported. “Some flights into and out of the New York and Washington, D.C. metro area airports area may be delayed.”
Officials say they are routing air traffic around the affected airspace. It is unclear how many flights have been impacted by the delays.
Reagan National Airport “is experiencing Gate Hold and Taxi delays between 1 hour and 1 minute and 1 hour and 15 minutes in length and increasing” due to an “ERAM automation issue,” according to the FAA’s Air Traffic Control System Command Center, The Post reported.
ERAM stands for En Route Automation Modernization and is the computer “system that processes flight and surveillance data, provides communications and generates display data to air traffic controllers,” according to the FAA.
Similar delays were being reported at Dulles International Airport and Baltimore-Washington International Marshall Airport, and New York’s La Guardia and John F. Kennedy International Airports.
The problems at the major East Coast hubs could cause major delays across the country.
