As her presidential campaign deals with the latest fallout from the controversy over her private email server, former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton asked people on Twitter Wednesday afternoon to describe how student loan debt makes them feel “in 3 emojis or less.”

Mrs. Clinton had rolled out a package on college affordability earlier in the week. As Marketwatch reported, while some users responded with crying emojis, others poked fun at the technique and still others offered a grammar critique, suggesting “fewer” instead of “less.”

Later Wednesday, she actually tweeted out the story’s headline — “Hillary Clinton asked Twitter to explain student debt in emoji — and let’s just say it backfired” — along with the shrugging “¯\_(ツ)_/¯” emotion and a link to a Medium post from Mrs. Clinton on student debt and college affordability.
