Hisashi Iwakuma threw a no-hitter on Wednesday afternoon in the Seattle Mariners’ 3-0 win over the Baltimore Orioles at Safeco Field.
Iwakuma struck out seven and walked three in picking up his fourth win of the season. He threw 116 pitches, 77 of them for strikes.
Iwakuma became the fourth pitcher in Major League Baseball to throw a no-hitter in 2015, following Chris Heston of the San Francisco Giants, Max Scherzer of the Washington Nationals, and Cole Hamels, then of the Philadelphia Phillies.
Iwakuma became the second Japanese-born pitcher to throw a no-hitter in the Major Leagues, following Hideo Nomo, who threw no-hitters in 1996 and 2001.
Iwakuma became the third Seattle Mariners pitcher to throw a solo no-hitter, following Randy Johnson, Chris Bosio and, most recently, Felix Hernandez in 2012. Hernandez’s no-hitter came in a perfect game against the Tampa Bay Rays.
The team also had a no-hitter shared among six pitchers, led by starter Kevin Millwood, earlier in 2012.
It was the first complete game of Iwakuma’s MLB career, in his 88th start.
Wednesday’s game is the 15th no-hitter pitched against the Orioles or their predecessor, the St. Louis Browns. The last was by Clay Buchholz of the Boston Red Sox in 2007.
