Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida has confirmed that he will be making the announcement about his political future on April 13 at the iconic Freedom Tower in downtown Miami, the Miami Herald reported.
“To me, it’s a place that’s symbolic of the promise of America,” Mr. Rubio told the Miami Herald, alluding to how the building served as a first stop in the 1960s for immigrants that left Cuba.
“Literally, five decades ago, tens of thousands of people came here after losing their country and began their new life,” Mr. Rubio told the newspaper. “The first steps they took in this country were in the hall that we’ll be standing in.”
Mr. Rubio, the son of Cuban immigrants, is expected to announce at the event that he is running for president, and earlier this week directed supporters to a MarcoRubio.com website, telling them they could sign up for the chance to attend the event.
The Tampa Bay Times first said late last month that Mr. Rubio had reserved the Freedom Tower, but the freshman lawmaker did not confirm the location until Thursday.
Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas announced his candidacy late last month at Liberty University in Virginia, and Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky is expected to announce Monday in Louisville.
