Tiger Woods announced on Wednesday that he will play in the Quicken Loans National at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Virginia. this July, committing to the tournament that benefits his charitable foundation.
Woods, who returned to the PGA Tour after a two-month layoff when he played in the Masters two weeks ago, also plans to play in the Memorial, the U.S. Open, The Greenbrier Classic and the British Open. He shot a 5-under-par 283 at Augusta National, his first tournament since withdrawing from the Farmers Insurance Open in early February, and tied for 17th.
A two-time champion of the Quicken Loans National, having won the event in 2009 and 2012, Woods missed the cut in his return to the event last season. He had missed nearly three months after undergoing back surgery and said at the time he returned nearly a month earlier than he originally expected.
The event, formerly known as the AT&T National, was first held in 2007 and had been held at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md. five of the first seven years. It moved to suburban Philadelphia in 2010 and 2011 as it underwent renovations for, and then hosted, the U.S. Open, before returning in 2012.
It will not only shift venues this year but will also be held a month later, moving from late June to late July. The event was squeezed by the British Open, which will be held a week earlier than normal.
Robert Trent Jones Golf Club has hosted the Presidents Cup four times, last in 2005. The event will return to Congressional Country Club in 2016, then will be held at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm in Potomac, Md., which hosted a PGA Tour event from 1987 through 2006, in 2017.
