In near-perfect spring weather, President Obama decided to leave the White House on foot Wednesday for an unscheduled stroll with his newly honored teacher of the year.

Mr. Obama walked off the White House grounds with Shanna Peeples of Amarillo, Texas, a high school English teacher who works with impoverished immigrant students, and a contingent of Secret Service agents. They strolled about one block to Teaism, a tea shop and cafe on H Street near Lafayette Square, with photographers and reporters in tow.

The president honored Ms. Peeples earlier Wednesday morning during a ceremony in the White House Rose Garden with 55 of the nation’s top educators and Education Secretary Arne Duncan.

“We all depend on our teachers, whether we have kids in the schools or not,” Mr. Obama said. “They deserve our support and our appreciation. And they also probably deserve higher salaries.”
