President Obama and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe took an unscheduled tour of the Lincoln Memorial on Monday afternoon.
Mr. Abe is in Washington for meetings with Mr. Obama and to attend a state dinner at the White House on Tuesday night.
The duo’s trip to the Lincoln Memorial appears to have been hastily arranged, as it was not listed on the president’s official daily schedule.
“This is an opportunity before the formal events tomorrow to spend time together one-on-one at a place of historical significance for the United States, as this month marks both the 150th anniversary of the Civil War’s end as well as President Lincoln’s passing,” an administration official said.
