Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz isn’t backing down from the spirit of the company’s widely mocked “Race Together” campaign — a new store will open in Ferguson, Missouri.
Mr. Schultz said Tuesday that the new store in the St. Louis suburb, which was turned upside down by the shooting death of Michael Brown, was a “way to create employment,” Fortune magazine reported.
The U.S. Justice Department and a St. Louis County grand jury both decided not to pursue charges against former police Officer Darren Wilson, who shot and killed the 18-year-old during an altercation Aug. 9, 2014. Widespread protests and looting occurred in the city after the grand jury’s verdict was announced Nov. 24, 2014.
A timeline for the new Ferguson Starbucks was not given, Fortune reported.
Starbucks attempted to have baristas talk with customers about race-related matters in March, but the campaign ended after a flood of negative feedback from individuals across the political spectrum.
