Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg plans to pump $42 million into 100 cities through his charity organization.

Bloomberg Philanthropies issued a statement this week vowing to help mayors and local leaders “use data and evidence to engage the public, make government more effective and improve people’s lives.”

“We’ll help them build on their progress, and help even more cities take steps to put data to work,” Mr. Bloomberg said. “What works? That’s a question that every city leader should ask — and we want to help them find answers.”

The organization will accept 275 applications from U.S. cities with populations between 100,000 and 1 million people, the statement said.

Data-analysis organizations Sunlight Foundation and Results for America, and research centers at Johns Hopkins University and the Harvard Kennedy School will partner with Mr. Bloomberg’s group on the project, Business Insider reported.
