A pedestrian-bridge collapse Wednesday afternoon onto the MARC and Metro tracks in Prince George’s County threw a wrench into evening train service and will close a Metro station at least part of Thursday.

There were minor delays in MARC service Wednesday evening, but the Metro subway system was hit harder.

According to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, service between College Park and Greenbelt, the last two stations on the Green Line, was suspended and will not resume through Thursday morning.

The Greenbelt station will be closed Thursday morning, and the Yellow and Green Lines will only go as far as College Park, though free shuttle buses will be provided to and from Greenbelt, according to radio station WTOP. Metro also advised riders to use the New Carrollton or College Park stations as alternates.

Nobody was injured in the accident in the 5100 block of Berwyn Road in Berwyn Heights, according to PG County emergency officials.

Officials attributed the bridge collapse to a Metro contractor’s construction equipment hitting the bridge.
