House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy said Monday his chamber will take up a Senate bill that lets Congress take a second look at the emerging nuclear deal with Iran.
Sen. Bob Corker, Tennessee Republican, will bring his bill before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in the afternoon.
Mr. McCarthy, California Republican, said he told Mr. Corker that his chamber is ready to act after the full Senate puts its stamp on the legislation.
“If he is able to get his agreement out of the Senate, it’s my intention to bring it to the floor of the House,” Mr. McCarthy told reporters.
Later Monday, Secretary of State John Kerry is slated to brief all House members on the framework of the international deal with Tehran, as Republican lawmakers and some Democrats say they want a bigger voice in the negotiations.
President Obama has threatened to veto the Corker bill, saying it could torpedo the negotiations.
But Mr. McCarthy said the bill should pass with flying colors in the Senate, setting up the House for a possibly veto-proof vote in his chamber.
“I think they’re going to have a very high number,” he said of the upper chamber.
