Outgoing Attorney General Eric Holder issued a memo to Department of Justice staff on Friday kindly reminding them not to engage in illegal sexual activity with prostitutes.
Mr. Holder wrote in the letter, published Friday, that he “wanted to reiterate to all Department personnel, including attorneys and law enforcement officers, that they are prohibited from soliciting, procuring, or accepting commercial sex,” The Washington Post reported.
He wrote that even in places where prostitution is legal, paying for sex creates a greater demand for human trafficking “and a consequent increase in the number of minor and adult persons trafficked into commercial sex slavery.”
The letter comes after a report from the DOJ’s Office of Inspector General released last month containing allegations that agents within the Drug Enforcement Agency hired prostitutes for parties. The Post reported that the sex parties were held in Colombia.
The report also included accusations from Colombian officials of DEA agents visiting brothels. The agents claimed that brothels were “considered a part of the local culture.”
Seven of the ten agents accused in the report admitted to their involvement, and received suspensions from the DEA ranging between two and ten days.
