Former Vice President Dick Cheney on Tuesday told House Republicans that President Obama has made the U.S. look “weak around the world” and he let the terrorist threat grow on his watch, reported The Hill.
Mr. Cheney, who was a leading figure in the “war on terror” pursued under President George W. Bush, met behind closed doors with House Republicans a day before President Obama is set to address the nation with a new strategy against the growing terrorist army known as the Islamic State.
Mr. Cheney, an outspoken critic of Mr. Obama, described the Islamic State as “very dangerous” and warned that under Mr. Obama the U.S. is viewed as “weak around the world,” Rep. Rep. Mac Thornberry, Texas Republican, told the newspaper.
The former vice president did not offer an opinion in the ongoing debate over whether Congress should vote on authoring military action against the Islamic State, which is also known as ISIL or ISIS, said Mr. Thornberry.
Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Florida Republican and member of the House Foreign Relations Committee, said Mr. Cheney warned Republicans to remain vigilant against the terrorist threat.
Later Tuesday, congressional leaders are scheduled to meet with President Obama at the White House to discuss his strategy for confronting the Islamic State.
