Sen. Ted Cruz, Texas Republican, blasted Senate Democrats on Tuesday for moving forward with a plan to amend the Constitution to curb political spending, calling the action a “smoke and mirrors distraction” from a bleak midterm election forecast.
“There are not sufficient votes on either side of the aisle to pass this amendment. Republicans know it and Democrats know it,” Mr. Cruz said.
Senate Democrats, he said, want to use the amendment as part of their re-election campaigns.
Mr. Cruz, a potential contender for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination, criticized Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Nevada Democrat, for his continued attacks on the billionaire Koch brothers. He accused Mr. Reid of mounting an “unprecedented slander campaign on two private citizens.”
“What Sen. Reid is doing to two private citizens who are fighting to exercise their free speech rights is reprehensible. It’s embarrassing to this institution,” Mr. Cruz said.
