The former mayor of New Orleans, Ray Nagin, shuffled off Monday to serve a 10-year federal prison term on corruption convictions stemming from the city’s years-long recovery of Hurricane Katrina devastations.
Mr. Nagin is serving out his sentence in Texarkana, Texas, Reuters reported.
He will appeal his conviction for 20 criminal counts of bribery, conspiracy and money laundering, all tied to city contracts he granted during his mayoral stint, 2002 to 2010, and at a period when the city was struggling to rebuild, Reuters said.
Mr. Nagin will be required to serve about eight-and-one-half years before being eligible for an early release, due to good behavior, Reuters reported.
