White House officials have announced that President Obama will delay further action on immigration reform until after the midterm elections in November.
Mr. Obama had previously planned to act on the issue by the end of the summer. The decision will likely relieve several vulnerable Democrats in tough Senate re-election races.
White House Officials told the Associated Press that Mr. Obama concluded that circumventing Congress through executive actions during the midterm campaign would politicize the issue and hurt future efforts to pass a broad overhaul.
The officials told the news source that the president made his decision Friday as he returned to Washington from the NATO summit in Wales and added that he had no specific timeline to act, but that he still would take his executive steps before the end of the year.
